If you know of or you’re looking for a database or list of employees that isn’t here it doesn’t mean it’s not out there. Ask me and I’ll look for it and add it to PI buzz. There are so many government agency directories and salary lists that I can’t keep up with adding them as quickly as they proliferate.

  1. Any citizen of TN can request the names and salaries of employees of government entities. They can’t deny the release without citing the exception. This may answer some of your questions: http://www.comptroller.tn.gov/openrecords/faq.asp. Make your request in writing. You can use this form: http://www.comptroller.tn.gov/repository/OpenRecords/FormsSchedulePoliciesGuidelines/20170307RecordsRequestForm.pdf. Also look at this one: https://www.nfoic.org/tennessee-sample-foia-request.

  2. I requested a list of salaries for my county sheriffs department workers in TN ( which I work for.) I was told they wouldn’t give them to me, but would give them to the head of my department. Is this a violation of open records in your opinion?

  3. Do you know of a salary database for Shelby County TN employees? I see City of Memphis but not Shelby County. They are two separate entities.

  4. Salaries of government workers are a public record but in Tennessee those records must be requested by a resident of the state. (See http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/access-public-records-tennessee) Direct your request to Raymond Pipkin . Here’s a draft request:

Pursuant to Tennessee’s Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

A copy of the most recent database maintained by this agency detailing public employee compensation across the county.

I am specifically requesting that this release include, for each employee, the following: Name of Employee, Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Job Title, Agency/department, and Earnings – including overtime.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 7 business days, as the statute requires.

  5. I would like to see Shelby County TN Government Employee Salaries which are not posted.

  6. Tennessee Open Records Act designates government employee salaries public records, but not many are posted online. Records would have to be requested from each school district. I haven’t seen a site that aggregates multiple school district pay records.

  7. I am interested in finding salaries for school system positions throughout the state of Tennessee. Is there a link that will take me to such public information?
